1988 in West Berlin, European Culture Capital, people escape over the Wall from West to East. While in the East, the authorities try to keep their youth by inviting Western bands to play concerts.
Noone talks about the year before 1989 much. But in hindsight it is interesting to see what led up to the fall of the Wall. Of course, there was much more political activism in East Berlin that we in the West didn't know about. I only relate what we were aware of and was reported in the media (although I have added in a bit of hindsight knowledge to those events).
I am glad you are back ... I enjoy reading about what was happening in Berlin back in the day and thinking about how that differed to what was happening in my life at the same time here ... very different of course!
I'd love to hear more about NZ in the eighties. It was always such a shining example for disarmament campaigners like myself! I always wanted to go there, especially after seeing "The Piano" by Jane Campion.
I’m so pleased you decided to write this post Xanthe. There was so much happening in Berlin that I don’t remember hearing about.
